A plant that last flowered when woolly mammoths roamed the plains is back in bloom.

Biologists have resurrected a 30,000-year-old plant, cultivating it from fruit tissue recovered from frozen sediment in Siberia. The plant is by far the oldest to be brought back from the dead: the previous record holder was a sacred lotus, dating back about 1200 years.

The late David Gilichinsky from the Soil Cryology Laboratory in Moscow, Russia, and colleagues recovered the fruits of the ice age flowering plant (Silene stenophylla) from a fossilised squirrel burrow in frozen sediments near the Kolyma river in north-east Siberia. Radiocarbon dating of the fruit suggests the squirrel stashed it around 31,800 years ago, just before the ice rolled in.

By applying growth hormones to the fruit tissue, Gilichinsky and his colleagues managed to kick-start cell division and ultimately produce a viable flowering plant.

Modern day S. stenophylla looks similar to the resurrected plant, but has larger seeds and fewer buds. Modern plants also grow roots more rapidly. Studying these and other differences will reveal how the plant has evolved since the last ice age.

Alan Cooper, director of the Australian Centre for Ancient DNA at the University of Adelaide, is impressed but cautious, because some supposedly “ancient” plants grown from permafrost have turned out to be modern contaminants. To rule out this possibility, Gilichinsky’s team went to some lengths to verify that the fruit came from undisturbed deposits, they say.

“It is an exciting result and tells us we shouldn’t just look for seeds when trying to generate ancient material,” says Steven Penfield, a plant scientist at the University of Exeter, UK.

Similar fossilised burrows have been identified in Alaska and Canada. “If permafrost continues to melt, I would think it likely that a small fraction of ancient seeds will germinate, survive and grow spontaneously,” says Buford Price from the University of California, Berkeley.

The Doctors Health Press, a publisher of various natural health newsletters, books and reports, including the popular online Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin, is lending its support to a new study that makes a connection between heart disease and prostate cancer.

Boston, MA (PRWEB) February 20, 2012

The Doctors Health Press, a publisher of various natural health newsletters, books and reports, including the popular online Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin, is lending its support to a new study that makes a connection between heart disease and prostate cancer.

As reported in Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin on Monday, February 13, 2012 (http://www.doctorshealthpress.com/heart-health-articles/the-link-between-heart-problems-and-your-prostate), researchers at Duke University found a significant link between coronary artery disease and prostate cancer. They believe the two conditions may have shared causes.

According to the Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin article, coronary artery disease kills more adults in the U.S. than any other cause, accounting for one in four deaths. Risk factors include inactivity, obesity, high blood pressure and cholesterol, cigarette smoking, and diabetes.

Similarly, says the article, prostate cancer is a common killer. It?s the second-most lethal cancer for U.S. men, behind lung cancer, with about 240,000 new cases diagnosed a year, and 34,000 deaths. Previous studies exploring the relationship between coronary artery disease and prostate cancer risk have found conflicting results.

The Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin article reports that, in the current study, the Duke team used data from 6,390 men enrolled in a large study to test the prostate cancer risk reduction benefits of a drug. All participants had a prostate biopsy at the two- and four-year marks. They also provided a detailed medical history that included their weight, incidence of heart disease, alcohol intake, medication use, and other factors.

The Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin article also reports that, among the men in the study, 547 reported a history of coronary artery disease. This group of men tended to be older, heavier, and less healthy, with higher baseline PSA levels (used to predict prostate cancer), plus more incidences of diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. These men were much more likely to develop prostate cancer, even after accounting for everything else.

Having coronary artery disease increased the men?s risk of prostate cancer by 35%. This risk kept rising as time went on. The group was 24% more likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer within the first two years of the study than men who reported no heart disease. By four years into the study, this group?s prostate cancer risk was 74% higher.

According to the Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin article, what researchers don?t yet know is what is causing the link. But the connection is quite strong and is very much worth considering for all men who suffer coronary artery disease.

Tonight he accused me of “withholding intimacy” because I asserted (what I believe to be) my right to my privacy. A few nights ago he had asked me what I was reading on my e-reader and I said it was a self-help book, without going into further detail — it was a book about emotional unavailability. I avoided telling him specifically which book it was because in the past he has immediately personalized the subject (“Oh, so you think I’m emotionally unavailable??”) and has also mocked me quite nastily for reading self-help books. I did explain this to him at the time and he denied ever doing it — he says I must have misunderstood him. There have also been times that he has criticized the novels that he’s seen me read, saying that they’re “stupid”. So I’m a bit wary of revealing my reading material!

Bottom line, unless I’m reading a manifesto on how to murder one’s SO and escape undetected , I don’t see why it matters what I’m reading. Normally he can just glance at the cover of the book and know the answer in a second; he doesn’t have that advantage with the e-reader.

So tonight he started in on me about being secretive and said he had just been making conversation, whereas I was “rude and hostile” by refusing to anwer his question about the book I was reading. I explained that, in a general sense, people have the right to not provide information according to their own boundaries — he seems to feel that posing the question obligates the other person to answer, that he is somehow entitled to have his curiosity satisfied. The same if he asks me “What are you thinking about?”.

He got pissed off and walked out. Over this.

IMO – there are very few situations in a relationship where you truly are obligated to provide answers. The ebook/what are you thinking examples do not apply. As for his denial of prior bad behavior – be careful if there is a pattern of that.

Secondly, this is not a question of privacy or boundaries. You weren’t on the toilet. If your husband asks what you are doing on the internet or what you’re reading, you should be willing and forthcoming with the answers. Otherwise, you could quite easily begin issues that are matters of trust. The last thing you want is to end up wondering and feeling insecure about who he is talking to or whose blogs he’s reading. That’s where your “privacy and boundaries” is headed. And when it all starts, you won’t possess the presence of mind to remember you are the one who started that mess. Moreover, you called yourself protecting yourself and preventing an argument, but an argument ensued anyway, didn’t it? And you weren’t so protected afterall.

First and foremost, he makes conversation by asking what you are reading, not by criticizing what you read and thereby (and quite insultingly), criticize you and the reading material. However, what he does (and says) is not nearly so important as what you do about what he does (and says). You took it from him and allowed him to judge, belittle, and berate you, and then you allowed him to entirely dismiss your expressions and feelings about his insults by placing the blame, the offense, and the breakdown in communication squarely on your shoulders. He stormed out of the room like a wounded child. In other words….according to him….you offended yourself AND him. What kind of mess is that?

Your solutions were to first hide the subject matter of your reading material so as to prevent him belittling you over it, and then you submitted to an entirely different (and pointless) argument about privacy and boundaries. You will forever flip, flop, and fly around in the dust of his wrath if you keep getting caught up like this and not stand up for yourself.

The polite and engaging thing for him to do (since he so sincerely CLAIMS he was only making conversation) would have been to further inquire of your reading material in such a way that he proved himself considerate, interested, and engaging (in conversation). You know, he could have shown a little interest and possibly improve himself by it. Honestly though, I don’t know what you are learning if this is example of how you handle things with your husband. Stand up for yourself and rather than constantly trying to sneak and hide to protect yourself from his judgmental and offensive nature, stop him in his tracks when he offends you.

Teach him how to treat you. If your feelings are hurt when he says these things, then you know you have no business allowing him to say them. Let him know you do not live your life by his permission or approval. Therefore, sharing with him what you are reading does not give him license to make you out to be two feet tall for reading it. Make sure he understands if he has no nice, considerate, and/or engaging responses, then shut the hell up and keep his opinions to himself.

I’ve tried that in the past and he uses the old “I was only joking” defense or he repeats his exact words in a pleasant, neutral tone instead of the actual mocking tone in which it was first delivered and asks “What’s wrong with saying that?” (well, duh, tone is everything!). Then tells me I’m being overly sensitive.

You might be amazed at the things you can accomplish with your home that will not require financial assistance. It is a broad belief that refurbishing your home takes money that you do not have and will need to finance; untrue. There are many different things you can improve on in your home without spending too much. Sometimes you can make a huge difference with the smallest of improvements. The following are a few instances of home facelifts that are within your budget.

So you can see that http://mortgagereliefamerica.com is a topic that you have to be careful when you are learning about it. New floors in your home? If you want them, you need to do a little planning. More than likely, you are envisioning thousands of dollars leaving your checkbook and contractors appearing at your doorstep. Thankfully, there is no need to do this anymore. Today there is laminate flooring that imitates the look and feel of hard wood flooring and is a fraction of the cost. More than that, laminate flooring is easy to install yourself. You won?t have to work hard at all as this flooring goes right into place with little or no effort. Home improvement stores would be your next stop so that you could get the flooring and a little help.

Give rugs and carpets a thorough cleaning. The best idea for a thorough carpet cleaning would be to rent a commercial shampooer from a grocery outlet near you. A good cleaning can brighten up your rugs and carpets by several shades. This would be a practical move due to the minimal amount it will cost. Not a complicated procedure at all; simply rent the contraption from the store, take it home and use it and then take it back to the store you rented it from. If you are considering putting in new carpet or rugs, you should give the old ones a good scrub before resorting to that expense. You might find that new flooring is no longer needed!

Another thing you can do is change your appliances. Many home improvement stores have sales on many items; just pick a couple of them up and replace the old ones in your home. New appliances usually come with warranties and insurance policies which is good. You can even get free delivery and installation depending upon the appliance that you buy. It is amazing at how much switching out your refrigerator, range, dishwasher, sink, etc can help spruce up a room. New items also use less energy which is another reason you should get them.

Even if you?re on a tight budget, you can do a home improvement project with no problem at all. Installing appliances yourself or doing some of the work will save on the overall costs. Instead of doing large renovations, you might want to do smaller ones, especially ones that you can do all the work yourself.

WASHINGTON ? The Obama administration is slapping sanctions on Iran’s ministry of intelligence and security, asserting that it supports global terrorism, commits human rights abuses against Iranians and participates in ongoing repression in Syria.

The Treasury Department announced Thursday that it added the ministry to its list of specially designated global terrorists. The step freezes any assets the group may have in U.S. jurisdictions, bars Americans from doing business with it and bans ministry employees from travel to the United States. The effect of the sanctions will be largely symbolic as it is not known to have holdings in the U.S.

The announcement said the ministry had helped al-Qaida agents in Iran and provided then with identity cards and passports and had given money and weapons to al-Qaida in Iraq.

Loskeran Dot likely to prevail in the William Hill Hotbox Bet Stakes at Newcastle ? 480m A1 Preview?

William Hill Hotbox Bet Stakes will be the highlight of Newcastle?s Wednesday card. The contest has a powerful line-up, but Loskeran Dot, can easily be rated as favourite for the 480 metre long A1 Heat, starting at 13:12.

In pursuit of a cash prize of ?118, six high status hounds will step out in the middle. The list of contestants includes Loskeran Dot,?Cashen Loca,?Prosecutor,?Target Neeson, Witton Ace, and?Manilla Star.

There will be plenty of cheer for Loskeran Dot, as the bitch is stepping into this contest after a win. It was the evening of February 11, when J. Wright?s trainee displayed one of her best performances.

There were number of strong contenders in the pack, but none of them could challenge Loskeran Dot?s rampant run. Consequently, the young bitch grabbed a dominating 3-length victory.

According to the betting forecast, Tyrur Ted?s daughter, out of Loskeran Dee Jay, has been declared favourite with the winning chances of 2 to 1.

Since she is in a winning mood at the moment, one can expect the bitch to dominate the party all the way through.

The bitch has quite a few chances, but Cashen Loca, and?Prosecutor, will be two big threats to her. The duo has been acknowledged as second joint favourites of the race, carrying the odds of 3 to 1, each. Cashen Loca is coming into this mega race after clinching two back to back wins.

Last weekend, the fawn bitch was at her best, winning a 480 metre race by ? a length. The punters have every reason to support her. However, her fans need not to be over confident.

Another point that goes in favour of Cashen Legend?s daughter, out of Shakira Live is that the bitch has a tradition of turning in a clear run. If she manages to do so once again, she will be a delight to watch.

Prosecutor will also look to regain his lost momentum. The black dog was very ordinary in his last race, where he completed the order of finish. However, a hound of his class can bounce back anytime. Thus, it will not be an easy outing for his rivals.

After a few dismal performances, the bookies are not expecting much from, Target Neeson. Since his last victory came in January, the hound has not been showing anything special. Despite the fact that he came second in his last outing, expecting something better than finishing among the top three might be a bit risky tonight.

Witton Ace and?Manilla Star have been given the winning possibility of 6 to 1, each. Witton Ace lacks ability to show an early pace, and is likely to be trailing the rest. Yet, a strong finish might earn him a notable slot on the table. The white and black dog has won only one race so far in 2012.

After her four consecutive wins last fall, victories seem to have dried up for Manilla Star. The bitch will have to give an all out effort to turn the tables around.

Prediction

Following her recent performances, Loskeran Dot, is a clear favourite tonight. Putting money on Cashen Loca, and?Prosecutor is a risk worth taking, however be mindful that Loskeran Dot, will not let anyone steal the show easily.
